I chose Senator Joseph Biden, Jr. as my pick over a year ago because more than any other candidate for president, in either party, he clearly understood foreign policy. He was the only candidate, out of more than 20, offering a plan to withdraw safely from Iraq without leaving chaos behind. In 2004 John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, lost the foreign policy debate to President Bush. I didn’t want to see Joe Biden go down the way Kerry did. I gave a modest amount, $50, to Biden’s fledgling candidacy in November of last year. As a college student, that’s about all I could afford to give.
On January 3rd, I told my friends that if Biden made it through the Iowa caucuses that night, I’d give him another fifty. Joe never got that far. He bowed out after a surprise victory by Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. My candidate had been beaten, but in Senator Obama I saw the same strength and thoughtfulness that made me fall for Joe Biden in the first place. On February 5th, I caucused for Obama along with over 135,000 other Minnesotans--more than ten times the amount that came out for John McCain.
On Saturday, Joe Biden joined Barack Obama on the Democratic ticket for President.
Obama & Biden for America. It certainly does have a nice ring to it.
