Bypass bridge work begins Monday

County News/File

Bridge work on the Highway 14 bypass south of Waseca will begin Monday. Officials urge caution while traveling along Highway 13 near the bypass area.

WASECA — Construction will resume on the Highway 14 bypass Monday, when bridge workers begin driving pikes in the ground south of town near the Highway 13 intersection.

Two new bridges, one for eastbound and one for westbound traffic, will carry Highway 14 traffic over Highway 13 when the project is completed.

The work is part of the Highway 14 four-lane expansion project around Waseca that began in July 2008.

Minnesota Department of Transportation officials urge caution near the interchange for Highways 13 and 14. Motorists should watch for equipment and workers on the road shoulders as well as workers crossing Highway 13.

“As you’re heading south of town on Highway 13, as you get in that area, they will be busy,” said Rebecca Arndt, a Public Information Officer with Mn/DOT.

The bridge work officially kicks off the construction season for the bypass project, as Ardt said, “bridge workers can do things in weather that road workers can’t.”

By the time the bridge work is completed later in the summer, the road projects season will be well under way.

The bridge work “can take the better part of the season,” Arndt said.

As for what other bypass projects will be completed this summer, Arndt said that Mn/DOT officials will meet with contractors in late April to work out a strategy and schedule.

Completion of the Highway 14 four-lane to Interstate 35 in Owatonna is expected by 2012. The construction cost of the Waseca and Steele County segments totals $108 million.
