WASECA — Members of the 36 counties that make up the Southern Minnesota Tourism Association will be coming through Waseca next week to see what Waseca offers to those visiting the county.
The association was formed in 1985 as a voluntary organization that promotes tourism in southern Minnesota.
“Each county contributes a nickel per capita,” Waseca Chamber of Commerce President Kim Foels said. “This is then used for marketing southern Minnesota as a region.”
She added is the first time Waseca has hosted an association meeting.
The chamber, tourism bureau and others have been working for months to prepare for the group’s arrival.
The visitors will tour locations such as the Masonic Temple, the Southern Research and Outreach Center, Farmamerica, various businesses both downtown and in the surrounding area, as well as the parks and bike trails.
Foels said the association holds five meetings a year and Waseca was selected for this month’s meeting.
“It’s a chance to showcase our county seat,” she said.
The second day will be spent at a meeting at the Waseca County Historical Society, where they will discuss how to promote scenic byways and trails.
These meetings help give member counties and idea of what others are doing to promote tourism, which can play a big part in a city or county’s economy.
Foels said that in Minnesota, more than $679 million came from visitors to the state and 15 percent of all Minnesota sales taxes come from the hospitality industry.
Foels said attendance varies from meeting to meeting, but with Waseca’s central location, she expects between 30 to 50 members on March 17 and 18.
