Parry seeks endorsement for Senate special election

WASECA — Less than a month after declaring that he would run for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives, Waseca businessman Mike Parry announced Tuesday that he is seeking the Republican endorsement in an upcoming special election to fill District 26 seat vacated by Sen. Dick Day.

Day announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the Senate effective Jan. 8, 2010.

“We had originally planned on Mike running for the Senate seat in the 2010 general election, however in earlier conversations this year with Senator Day and his plans to seek re-election, we decided it wasn’t in the best interest of the Republican party to have two vying for the seat,” said Parry’s Campaign Manager Michelle Pederson in a release e-mailed to the County News Tuesday.

“With Senator Day’s announcement this week, all that has changed,” she added.

With his eyes on the Senate race earlier, Parry said the next logical step after he believed Day would seek re-election was to pursue a seat in the House of Representatives.

With Tuesday’s announcement by Day, Parry said he is just interested in doing what is best for the Republican party.

“I’m in it for the long haul,” he said Tuesday evening. “I’m committed to making sure the Republican party is represented in the House and the Senate, the best way that I can do that.”

Parry served on Waseca’s City Council from 2004 to 2008 when he was defeated by current councilman Mark Christiansen. He owns his own consulting business and is partnered with his children in a Godfather’s Pizza franchise in Waseca. He currently serves on Waseca’s Economic Development Authority.
