Gobbling up the tradition

Every year about this time I see at least one poll question or one talking head on TV discussing the same topic.

Since 1934, there have been only two years the Detroit Lions did not play on Thanksgiving — 1939 and 1940. In 1966, the Dallas Cowboys became a turkey-day fixture. Since that year, the Lions and Cowboys have played on Thanksgiving every year.

Mainly because of the epic fail that is the Detroit Lions franchise over the last decade, some people want that changed so that there are more competitive games on what is perhaps the biggest day of the regular season for the NFL in years Brett Favre doesn't play AGAINST the Packers.

I say keep it the same.

I know the Lions have been bordering on unwatchable the last couple seasons. That’s exactly why they should continue to play on Thanksgiving.

Because of their ineptitude, Detroit never plays on national TV other than the traditional Thanksgiving Day game. Despite how bad they are, they always have at least one or two players that are worth watching. For many fans of teams outside of the NFC North, this is their only opportunity to watch players like Calvin Johnson, who would be a much more highly regarded receiver if he played on a half-way decent team.

The most obvious example as to why its a good idea to have a bad team like the Lions play on Thanksgiving is Barry Sanders. With all due respect to Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Emmitt Smith, Sanders is the best running back I’ve ever seen play. (Remember, I'm of the post-Walter Payton era) Because he played for a below-average Lions team his whole career, Thanksgiving was often the only chance he got to perform for a national audience.

In the case of the Cowboys, they are a good team but this year that game might be worse than the Lions’ as they play the Oakland Raiders. I have a feeling Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones played a role in this soft match-up. After all, he didn’t want to risk losing as he showed off his $1 billion middle finger to the recession on Thanksgiving.

One has to believe the Lions will come around. The Cowboys just need some worthy opponents. Keep it the way it is. It’s a good tradition and these things go in circles. There will be good football on Thanksgiving again.

Until then, sit back, eat some turkey and enjoy the blow-outs.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

i agree on changing the lineup for Thanksgiving also, why not have 1 game rematch of past Super Bowl, and 1 with 2 losing teams from Conference championship games and than 1 random game, or something in that fashion

I myself, along with a lot of other people I have talked to think the NFL should try a rotating Turkey Day system as a trial basis for...maybe 3 years and see how fans react. It's not as if the NFL is going to lose any amount of $$$$!!!
Now, with that said...why don't ALL cable and satellite systems have the NFL Network??..Why gyp your lucrative Sunday and Monday Night fans??

Anyways, now that I got THAT off my chest...LOL...Happy Thanksgiving everyone:)
