Police lodge members place in Mankato Chilifest contest

WASECA — This past Saturday was a good one for the local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #16.

Not only did they take part in the 2nd annual Mankato Chilifest, which raised more than $15,000 for Rett Syndrome and Mankato Veteran’s Memorial Place, but they also took home 1st, 3rd and the People’s Choice prizes.

“We had a really good showing from our Lodge,” Lodge President Trevor Kanewischer said. “It was a really fun event.”

Waseca County Deputy Anthony Martens took home first prize, while former city councilman and police officer Mike Parry tied for 3rd with fellow Lodge member Matt DuRose.

“It was fun and very, very unexpected,” Martens said on his win.

A member of the Lodge also snagged the People’s Choice award when John Judd was selected for the prize.

The Lodge was represented in two teams, “Sweet 16” for active law enforcement and “Good ol’ 16” for retired law enforcement.

Martens, who previously worked at Cully’s Depot in New Richland before becoming a deputy, was nominated to represent Sweet 16.

He decided to run with the team name and ended up making a sweeter, smokier style of chili. To help get this flavor he made some changes to the traditional recipe, this included using caramelized onions and roasted peppers.

Besides being the first time making this recipe, this was also the first time Martens has entered a contest like this.

Although he beat out the other 22 entries, he remained humble over his win.

“The most important winners were the vets and those with Retts,” he said.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmenal disorder that affects girls almost exclusively.

It is characterized by normal early growth and development followed by a slowing of development, loss of purposeful use of the hands, distinctive hand movements, slowed brain and head growth, problems with walking, seizures and intellectual disability.

Good Job to our local Law Enforcement! It is nice to read about some of the many positive things that you do, that often times go unnoticed! A great cause, I hope to put it on my calendar next year.
