WASECA — The state’s first Give to the Max Day resulted in more than $14 million donated to 3,434 Minnesota nonprofits by 38,778 donors.

The goal of Give to the Max Day — from 8 a.m. Nov. 17 to 8 a.m. Nov. 18 — was to raise as much money as possible for Minnesota charities in 24 hours, increasing giving to nonprofits across the state.

Second Harvest Heartland received 1,246 donations earning it the $5,000 bonus for the day for having the largest number of contributors.

In Waseca, two nonprofits reported positive results from Give to the Max Day.

Karen Buum, executive director of the Waseca Area Foundation, reported donations of approximately $1,100, including $525 for the Waseca education community given in memory of Stu Peterson by his family.

“I think the Web site will be a good tool for the people who are looking for their town, and ways to give back simply ... and enjoy the computer ... otherwise all other options continue to be available,” Buum said.

The Waseca County Historical Society raised just over $2,100 from 17 donors during the one-day event, according to CO-director Sheila Morris. Amounts matched have not been verified yet, she said.

“The main thing about this is that it’s probably going to be the way of giving in the future,” she said.

The site captures a statewide effort led by the Minnesota Community Foundation to capture the attention of online givers, Morris said.

“It’s a no-brainer. You go to GiveMn.org, find your geographic location or your fundraiser and donors anywhere in the world can go on line and make that donation.”

Morris said the Web site is laying the ground work for the future.

“For 20- and 30-somethings who aren’t used to donating yet, this is what they will look like in the future. They’ll go online for information, to join and participate and, if they’re near by, they’ll stop in,” said Morris.

“We are so thankful for the thousands of donors who helped support our nonprofit community on Give to the Max Day, which was truly an unprecedented day of giving in Minnesota,” said Dana Nelson, executive director of GiveMN.

“In Minnesota, our legacy of giving is strong. The tremendous outpouring of support further demonstrates Minnesotans’ generosity and our commitment to helping others.”

Sponsors of Give to the Max were the Minnesota Foundation, The Saint Paul Foundation and The Bush Foundation who provided $500,000 in matching funds. Those funds were used to cover transaction fees for the donations so that all the money raised went to the nonprofits selected by contributors. Because of the high number of donations, the donation match to each nonprofit was expected to be pennies per dollar. Donations given in November will be received by the nonprofits Dec. 15.

At GiveMN.org a search for nonprofits or browse for causes, projects and fundraisers. Enter “Waseca” and 92 results are listed. “Donate Now” buttons make giving to a favorite nonprofit, or to several nonprofit, easy every day.

A public school is not a nonprofit organization, but the PTO for the school is a nonprofit organization so you can give through them and they can in return use it for the public school.

Public schools are not nonprofit organizations. They are supported by taxes and everyone is required to pay taxes - it is not a choice of where our money goes.

TEAM Academy is included in that list of 92, but I did not find Waseca Public Schools there.
