Bluejays' journey ends at State

LAKEVILLE — Only one team from each class can end its season with a win in high school football.

Unfortunately for Bluejay Nation, Waseca will not be one of those teams as it took a 46-14 loss to Kasson-Mantorville Saturday in the Class AAA State Tournament Quarterfinal.

The Jays had won six consecutive games to earn the first State Tournament berth in program history. There they ran into a perennial Class AAA powerhouse in the Komets.

“We knew that they were super athletic, quick and deep,” said Waseca coach Brad Wendland. “They’ve got so many guys who are able to make plays. They got a couple of them back tonight that they hadn’t had. Too many playmakers. We couldn’t stick with them.”

Jake Hodge gave the Komets an early lead on a circus catch in the end zone. Bluejay cornerback Colton Tlusty played the fade perfectly but Hodge used his height to tip the ball up and juggle it three times before getting a grip and falling in bounds for the touchdown. The score made it 7-0 in favor of the Komets after the first quarter.

Three short drives for Waseca set K-M up with short fields. The Komets capped all of them off with touchdowns to take a 25-0 lead with 4:03 remaining in the half.

The Jays put together their first long drive of the game at the end of the second. A 30-yard run by Sam Milbrett brought them all the way down to the Komet 21. However, the drive came to a halt when Chris Paradise was able to intercept a pass in the end zone.

The Komets turned it right back to Waseca just one play later. Brandon Pederson was able to pounce on a loose ball to give possession back to the Jays at the K-M 19 with 39 seconds left.

Waseca got down to the 7-yard line but was unable to put it in as the clock ran out on the half and the teams entered the half at 25-0 in favor of the Komets.

“Defensively, we stopped the run great all year,” Wendland said. “Then this team, we didn’t have a consistent answer for them. We didn’t tackle well but some of that goes to them for having very good athletes.”

K-M got back on the board on the second play of the second half on a 48-yard touchdown run. A touchdown run of 31-yards for Hodge with 4:40 in the third put the Bluejays down 39-0 before they were able to get into the scoring mix.

Brad McIntosh laid up a perfect pass to Brandon Klug, hitting him in stride for a 42-yard touchdown connection on the ensuing drive. Tlusty knocked the PAT through and the Jays were on the board at 39-7.

After a Komet touchdown, the Jays’ defense put some points on the board midway through the fourth. Pat O’Neil scooped up a fumble on the K-M 5-yard line and walked into the end zone for the touchdown. Tlusty’s PAT was true and it was 46-14 in favor of the Komets.

Waseca was outgained on the ground 219-195. Picking up a majority of those yards for the Jays was Milbrett with 125 yards on 22 carries.

“It means everything to him,” Wendland said of Milbrett. “He would do whatever it took. You know what they say about one of those hunting dogs, if you don’t shut them down they’ll go and go and go until they die? That’s how he plays. He’s not going to stop for nothing. For as much athletic ability as he has, his best characteristic is his toughness. That’s mental and physical. His toughness helped to rub off on our team. His leadership in practice helped us get where we are.”

Pederson added 66 yards on 10 carries. McIntosh was 4-of-12 passing for 58 yards. Klug caught one pass for 42 yards and a touchdown. Milbrett, Theo Helms and Pederson all had one catch each, totaling 16 yards.

Helms led the Bluejay defense with 10 tackles, nine of which were solo, and one pass deflection. Pederson came up with eight tackles, seven solos and a fumble recovery. O’Neil recovered a fumble. Derek Gathier had a sack while Pederson and O’Neil teamed up for one.

Despite the loss, Wendland said making the first State Tournament appearance in program history was a huge boost to the program as well as the town of Waseca.

“We’ve just had a blast,” he said. “Our school has needed some good things to happen and this fall we’ve kind of set the bar for what our teams can accomplish. The town, we had an amazing number of folks here tonight to support us. This was the most important game in Waseca football history.”

Instrumental in the teams success this season were the 19 seniors on the squad according to Wendland.

“Our program needed a group of seniors like this,” he said. “It needed a team to be cohesive and to be motivated to practice like we practice and play like we play and hit like we hit and hustle like we hustle. Now they’ve set the example for the younger players of what it’s going to take to get back here and try to take the next step as we work towards our mission for our program to be among the top AAA programs in the state.”

After starting the season 2-3, the Bluejays rattled off six consecutive wins including three Section 2AAA wins before ending the season with the State Tournament loss. They finish with a 8-4 overall record.

“It’s been very emotional,” Wendland said, summing up the season. “We’ve experienced pain and heartache from the loss of Jacob Gleason that we thought would never go away and we experienced euphoria and happiness that we thought would last forever. When it’s all said and done and the dust settles, I’m just very proud of the journey that these young men were on this year.”

first off congrats to the jays! That team (and community) went through a lot with a loss of their teammate. Most teams would've buckled, but not our jays. I is the greatest season in bluejay sports history, so enjoy. It will be long time when four team qualify for state! Coach Gary with crosscountry is simply amazing. I have been an assistant coach in track for a couple of years, and I love the way he works the kids hard. He stays positive, and he gets the best out of his athletes through mutual respect!

Nobody wants to seem negative, but that's all this is. Be happy for those that did show up. And to call out teachers and administrators for leaving is flat out, not right. Stop and consider that many teachers that were at the game don't even have kids in school. I would not hold them to a higher standard.

Band was mentioned in an earlier post: How many concerts did you sit through without a student playing? Do you just go attend concerts with out a child performing? Attend a choir concert without a child in it. I hope you drove to witness the cross country team as they finished first in state and went to watch the tennis team. And I also hope you got to see the Marching Indoor Concert this weekend as well. With or without a student performing. Teachers and administrators do these types of things all year not because they have to, but because they want to support as much as they can and still keep their own families interests in mind.

Because people left your sport of choice on this particular evening, does not mean people don't care. Congrats Waseca...I saw you on the radio!

I know what you mean JMS. I thought about mentioning it but I didn't want to be too negative.

Did anyone ever notice how many people leave our home football games after the band plays at halftime. Where's the respect for our players there? I really don't care to listen to the band but I dont leave.

By: flounder on 11/16/09
Great for you Randy. I commend you. Having young kids is the best time of one's life in my opinion. (I didn't say ALL School Board Members)

By: Townie on 11/16/09
There would be a lot less negativity if everyone would just worry about themselves instead of what everyone else is doing.

By: Randy_Zimmerman on 11/16/09
flounder, I agree, that's why I stayed for the whole game. I don't think it's fair for you to criticize everyone for what a few may have done. Some may have had to get back for something, who knows. I ended up carrying my sleeping 5 year old out after the game was done, but you must have missed that.

Flounder let me ask you this what if the football score was the other way around and people left. Would you still complain? Just a question.

No worry about naming names as you can see I blog under my own name so that I am accountable just a personal choice.

I did leave before the game was over not in any disrespect to the team or coaches. I had 4 extra children besides my own that I brought to the game Knowing full well we would have to leave early weather we were winning or losing. due to other commitments those students had.

Your right we all need to lead by example.

Thanks to everyone for being committed to all our programs. We do live in a wonderful community

By: flounder on 11/16/09
I wasn't going to name any names Cathy.

By: flounder on 11/16/09
Ok maybe I'm wrong but I think leaving when our kids are working their butts off out there with no chance of winning is rude and disrespectful. I wish I had a nickel for every band concert I sat through to the end because I thought it was the proper, respectful thing to do. Are you saying it is ok to leave those events too, just because we have other things we might rather be doing? Or would it be ok for the kids to leave a class because they are bored?
Lead by Example.

By: CathyHoy on 11/16/09
Why is it that when we have something to be so proud of, some still need to look for negativity.

Can we be proud of the all the people that came and showed support? I sat by former blue jay players from the late 80's who came and don't even live in our community anymore. Is'nt that great.

Why is it we always have to look for something to complain about. Can we change the attitude and blog about all the great things this group of kids did. Not the fair weather teachers & School board members.

By: Randy_Zimmerman on 11/16/09
Waseca should be very proud of the success our schools have had this fall, in all aspects. Top academics in the state, state and nationally recognized schools, one of the best music programs in the midwest, a great drama department, and sending 4 out of 7 teams to the state tournament; that is AMAZING! Congratulations to the Bluejay football team, you took us farther than any other football team before you, great job! This could be something to build on!

By: Townie on 11/16/09
I traveled to watch the team play and win. When winning was no longer an option I headed back home. I have not missed a Bluejay football game in 10 years. I guess I am a "fairweather" fan right Flouder?

By: formerbluejaygreat on 11/16/09
Don't read too much into people leaving early from any event! Schedules, conflicts, weather, etc. These are all realities, many people can support only from a distance by listening on the radio for example! We all want our teams to succeed and fun! Enjoy the season for what it is!

By: glasshalffull on 11/15/09
Yes, some might say they were ashamed of the people that left early. I look at it as, look how many people drove out of town to follow the success of this team that did a great job this year. Are you ashamed of the people that left early because their kids were cold? Who cares if this was the only game some people showed up to this year. I think it was great just to see that many people show up to cheer on the Bluejays!!

By: Wasecamom on 11/15/09
Wonderful, amazing, keep fighting and never give up! Those are some of the words that I would use to describe the Varsity Football team this year. They fought hard all season and we are very, very proud of you! It has been a rough fall but you perservered and went far! We are very, very proud of you. What I am not proud of is how many people left the game last night before it was even over! I agree with the others on being ashamed of the people of Waseca who left that game before it was finished. You don't just walk out when things are down, where is your pride in the kids of this town? Very, very disappointing to see, but that seems to be the reality of many in Waseca lately, very disappointing!

By: WHSMOM on 11/15/09
Congratulations for getting so far Blue!

By: WHSMOM on 11/15/09
How sad that people walked out on the team when the were down!

By: flounder on 11/15/09
I am very proud of the players and coaches. Congrats on a GREAT season.
I am very ashamed of the mass exodus from the game before it was over. This group of fair weather fans included both teachers and school board members. It was a slap in the face to the efforts of the team. Shame on you!

By: mrsbrenmrrs on 11/15/09
Hey team you had a sad start to the season with Jacob's loss, but you pulled together and had an awesome year! You all worked hard and we are proud of you!
Blue Jays Rock!

By: formerbluejaygreat on 11/15/09
Sad end! Positive move toward another level of play, very much appreciate the efforts by the players and coaches, nice to maintain then achieve the next level! Good Luck
