WASECA — Aleyda Izaguirre has accomplished a great deal since moving to Waseca in 2006 because her sister lived here. Now it is home for her and her four children.
“I love this town; it’s lovely and small,” she said.
For working hard to reach her goals, Izaguirre was named the 2009 Waseca County Community Action Achievement Award honoree by Minnesota Valley Action Council. The award is presented annually to a county resident in each of the nine counties served by MVAC to recognize people who have used the agency, demonstrated achievements, and overcome multiple barriers while making improvements or achieving self-reliance.
“Aleyda’s dedication to becoming successful for herself and her children has made her a true achiever,” said the MVAC announcement of the award.
Izaguirre was nominated by Connie Larson, MVAC licensed social worker and vocational advisor.
“Each year MVAC nominates someone who has shown great personal accomplishment,” said Larson. “Aleyda is such a hard worker and from the start, she always did what she had to do to support her family.”
Izaguirre said she needed to provide for her family and she wanted to get her GED.
“That I can do,” she told herself. “I decided to do something; anybody can do it if they want to.”
Izaguirre was provided employment services through MVAC and held several seasonal and temporary jobs. In March, she received her GED, was hired as the ABE Outreach Coordinator for Waseca Community Education and worked two part time jobs before being offered full time position in housekeeping at the Waseca Medical Center.
Larson said Izaguirre volunteers, helps the elderly, and provides interpreter services to several agencies, especially Headstart.
“She is involved with her children in school and will help anyone with whatever she can do,” said Larson. “It was a pleasure working with Aleyda and seeing her dreams come true!”
“I have my GED, I own my home, I have a van, I’m working full time and I love it, and I have my children,” she said when Larson asked what Izaguirre is most proud of.
John and Kris Huebl, owners of John’s Service Garage in Waseca, were nominated for the 2009 Waseca County Supporter Award by Jody Weimert, MVAC family resource coordinator.
The annual award goes to a person or business who has worked with MVAC and its clients, developing a good relationship while supporting the MVAC mission.
Weimert said the Huebls have supported their efforts to assist low income families and youth.
“We use John and Kris to repair vehicles for our clients because not having a car is a major roadblock to finding a job,” she said.
John Huebl said they work with MVAC when some shops won’t.
“He makes it run to get by and to be safe,” Kris Huebl said about her husband’s work.
“You do what you can. It got to be easy to work with you guys,” he said to Weimert and Larson.
Weimert said working face to face with a business helps to develop a relationship; now they trust each other in the car repair transactions.
Larson said MVAC connects with a lot of different businesses through their clients. “It’s nice to find a business you trust who agrees with our mission.”
John Huebl also took on a youth through the agency’s youth program. The high school student wants to become a certified automotive technician.
Huebl knows the importance of real world experience because he started in a similar work program and now he owns the business.
“You never know where that’s going to take you,” Kris Huebl said.
“They’ve been great mentors beyond the call of duty,” Weimert said. “We also have come to depend on John’s Service Garage for fast, honest and dependable service in regards to servicing our clients’ vehicles.”
She said, “John and Kris are easy to work with and show our clients the same quality of customer service that they daily show all their customers.”
