WASECA — While anyone can fall victim to unflattering fashion trends, it is bridesmaids who have no choice but to smile and oblige.
Such was the case for Becky Sommers of Waseca, whose pale blue, long-sleeved bridesmaid dress, circa 1984, was declared the winner in the “Ugly Bridesmaid Dress Contest” at the Waseca County Free Fair on Saturday afternoon.
To be specific, Sommers was the maid of honor when she wore the dress. The wedding just so happened to be her sister’s, and the dress, made by her sister-in-law.
“I never did like it,” Sommers said. “I thought it looked really prom-dressy, myself. [My sister] didn’t want a prom dress, so that’s why we didn’t buy them in a store. But I told her those looked even more prom-dressy than the ones we tried on.”
The dress, which Sommers believes cost $75 or $80 to make, features lots of lace, and a “fancy bead thing in the back,” according to Sommers. There is a row of pearl beads, which are buttons, that runs up the back of the dress.
“I remember my husband telling me he thought I looked nice in it, and I thought, ‘What the hell?’” Sommers said.
Although Sommers’ sister was unaware that her bridesmaid dress was entered in the contest, Sommers said she thinks her sister will find it funny once she knows.
Sommers received a $20 gift certificate to “The Two of Us” in Waseca for winning the contest.
Placing second in the “Ugly Bridesmaid Dress Contest” (because, technically, there turned out to be only two dresses in the contest) was Wasecan Carol Born’s turquoise bridesmaid dress with matching sheer cover-up, from 1970. Born, too, wore the dress as the maid of honor in her sister’s wedding.
Unlike Sommers, though, Born asked her sister’s permission first before entering the dress in the contest.
“She said, ‘That’s fine,’” Born said. “We think it’s out of style. They have such nicer fabric to work with nowadays.”
As the recipient of the runner-up title in the contest, Born received a KRUE 92 t-shirt (the contest was sponsored by KOWZ 100.9 and KRUE 92).
Colleen Carlson, a marketing specialist for KRUE 92, hosted the event. Part of her job was to ask participants where they wore the dress, how much it cost, and if they had any significant memories of the dress. The dress with the loudest applause from audience members was deemed ugliest.
“It was fun,” Carlson said of the contest. “We’re looking for more participants next year.”
