WASECA — Only one pin was allowed.
And that’s all Waseca head coach Brad Lechner could ask for when his Bluejays squared off with state-ranked Blue Earth Area (No. 12 in Class A), which edged out the Jays 32-24 in a South Central Conference wrestling match on Tuesday in Waseca.
“The effort was there,” said Coach Lechner. “I told the guys, I really liked the effort. It’s probably the best effort we’ve had — complete, team-wise — all year. I was pretty happy with it.”
It was evident from the start that the Jays were going to give the Bucs all they could handle.
Waseca’s Tanner Pehrson (103 pounds) initiated the meet with a 3-0 decision win over Travis Hagodorn. But BEA countered when Jake Wirtjes (112) claimed a 8-4 decision atop Hunter Pehrson to knot things up at 3-3.
After Zach Gehloff (125) countered for the Jays with a 10-3 decision over D.J. Gronewald, the Bucs etched in three unanswered wins, as Nick Durisen (125) took a 16-7 major decision loss to Joe Franta, Adam Brouwers (130) was dropped in a 9-1 major decision by Carter Hanson and David Knutson (135) fell in a 18-3 technical fall to Bryce Werner. When the dust settled, Waseca found itself trailing 16-6.
Waseca, however, sprung back to life when Bruce Harguth (140) methodically worked a pin in 2 minutes, 48 seconds against Collin Nienhaus. Caleb Korb (145) kept the pace with a 5-2 decision over Sinjin Bell and the Jays were within one at 16-15.
Following the Bucs response at 152, where Aaron Ingram fell to Daniel Eckhardt in a 13-4 major decision, the Bluejays went on a run.
Jamal McDaniel (160) notched a 9-6 decision over Cody Klinksiek, Sam Milbrett (171) outdid Cody Eckhardt in a 6-4 decision and Brandon Pederson (189) ousted Taylor Andrews in a 8-3 decision. The three helped give Waseca a 24-20 edge with two matches remaining.
“We kind of knew that we needed some big points out of 160 through 189,” said Lechner.
In the ensuing match, however, BEA’s Matt Wilner (215), ranked fifth in Class A, was too much to handle for the Jays’ Justin Deling, who was pinned in 1 minute, 22 seconds.
“Deling,” Lechner said, “we kind of knew he’d be up for a battle. He’s (Wilner) huge and he’s ranked. And Deling was giving up twenty some pounds.”
Waseca had to surrender a forfeit in the final heavyweight match, rounding out the 32-24 tally.
Lechner mentioned that the Bluejays had been averaging five or six pins a loss; a stark contrast from their mere one pin allowed in the fall to the Bucs.
“Our kids did their job by not giving up the pins,” he added. “We knew this is probably one of the better teams in the state.”
Waseca will look to bounce back when it hosts New Ulm for a SCC match at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
