Owner faces charges in Dumpster dog case

A little over a week has passed since a dog was discovered inside a Dumpster on a cold Waseca night.

While Precious, a female rat-terrier mix, is doing well at the Animal Medical Center of Waseca, her owner faces a misdemeanor charge relating to the incident.

The dog was discovered by a Subway employee at the bottom of a Dumpster behind the restaurant around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28.

The dog was brought to the Animal Medical Center by Waseca police, where it was given a physical checkup to make sure everything was fine.

According to Police Captain Penny Vought, a 19-year-old Waseca woman has since been charged with animal mistreatment.

What happens to Precious next is up to the County Attorney’s Office, Vought said.

If it’s decided that the dog should remain as evidence, then Precious will remain in the care of the Animal Medical Center.

According to Police Chief Keith Hiller, Precious was intended to be in the trash bin only temporarily.

Hiller said it appeared as though there may have been an issue of having a dog in a home where pets were prohibited.

He said that the owner told police that the dog was put into the trash temporarily as a way of hiding her from the landlord.

While the owner will make her first court appearance later this month, a number of things can happen with Precious down the road.

She could be returned to the owner, or someone who knows the owner and can provide a good home for her. The other option would be to put the dog up for adoption.

Hiller said that if a pet owner is unable to take care of their animal, there are a number of options available to them, but abandonment is not one of them.

The first, and least expensive option is to find a friend or family that is willing to take in the pet.

If that doesn’t work, there may be room at the Animal Medical Center, but there is a fee of $41 for someone putting their pet up for adoption.

If you have a pet you don’t feel you can take care of, you should check with the Rice County Humane Society, which will take in any pet, according to Animal Medical Center Vet Tech Hayley Lines.

She said that is the easiest one to get in contact with because they have a centralized facility, as opposed to the Steele County Humane Society which is more of a collection of foster homes for pets.

Those interested in becoming a foster-pet owner in Waseca County can contact the Animal Medical Center at (507) 835-7100 for more information.

Those interested in learning more about the Rice County Humane Society can visit their Web site at www.ricecountyhumane.org.

Considering all the concerned comments here let's think of something else involving pets/animals. Our community has had some horrific things happening concerning "care" of animals. So just a reminder, each one of us can and should report any concerns, not just when it hits the paper. Hoarding, at large, improper shelter, not being fed/watered, and even worse, we can all be proactive. Don't be afraid to look around and pay attention-we can help prevent tragedies. Many are struggling financially and more pets may become vicitms.

One thing not mentioned, any chance the owner of the dog was an employee of Subway? Just a thought that came thru my head.....

Maybe it was a choice of where to live that was affordable. Maybe the animal was already in her possession before she moved there and she figured she could get away with it. Maybe after the landlord did a check (that late at night is questionable) she was going to go back and get the animal. Maybe she thought of this because someone called the landlord about it(complaint) and the landlord thought that would be a good time to check it out???

I,in no way condon this behavior, but the animal appears to be healthy, it wasn't injured.

She should make a decision now of whether she will be able to find a place to live that allows pets, or find someone who would like to adopt her pet, or put it up for adoption.

Either way, she will have consequences for her choices.

RIP: Common Sense. Landlord doesn't allow pets, so let's try and sneak a pet in. A trusting, unconditional loving creature who depends on humans for it's existance is stuck in a dumpster. Rather than fine the owner, make them pick up dog poo from the parks and bike trail -- in public with a yellow tee shirt on that says: "I threw my dog in a dumpster". And of course, do not return the dog to the owner OR a member of the family. Many times dogs that are turned over to the shelters because of neglect are picked up by another "friend" of the owner and put right back into the neglectful home.

If this is because there was an issue of pets being prohibited by the landlord didn't she know enough not to move in there? What happened to common sense -- none here I guess.

There are thousands of pets that need good homes. If you are not intending to care for the animal for its entire life, why would you even consider taking on the responsibility? And yes ladies and gentlemen-news flash-caring for an animal is a responsibility.

Of course people are more important than dogs! You would think that would go without saying. It's not as if the story was of a child AND a dog found in a dumpster and people are ONLY commenting on the dog. :)

I can say it's bad to treat a dog like this, just as I can say it's bad to abuse a person as well.

This goes beyond animal cruelty. Lets just think for a moment that if the dog hadn't been found, and the dumpster was emptied into a truck the next morning. The dog would have been killed by the pressure inside the garbage truck.

And yes when there is a child involved I would feel the exact same way. Although there are a number of children around that might benefit from a bit of discipline. Discipline is not abuse.

How can you call your pet, "Precious" and then put it in a dumpster? Haven't you noticed that cruelty to animals is always reported more than any abuse to humans unless it's a big story?

Returning this dog back to it's "owner" is a option that should not even be considered! She should not be allowed i agree to have pet's for a long time.

Children are abused every day in this town and there's never an uproar. I am a pet owner and I love my pets but I put more value on human life. Next time there's a story in the paper about a child being abused/neglected, I expect to see an even bigger uproar...

This dog is one that should not be returned to its owner. I am sorry but this young woman should not be allowed to have any pet for a period of years.

What a beautiful creature! The eyes say it all.

Temporary trash. Nice way to treat a living thing!
